Fic Round Up 2021
Yoinked from

I thought it would be fun to take a broader look at what I've done this year. Besides, I'm always a sucker for talking about fic writing in general.

Best/worst title?
Best: came down from the stars just to hold your hand, mostly because I came up with it on my own instead of using lyrics or poetry.
Worst: eventide; "worst" isn't exactly the term here, it's just that it's a very simple title, but at least the word itself sounds pretty.
Best/worst summary?
Hmmm, I like all of my summaries xD I usually go for single sentence summaries, which are my favorites. I'm not really big on giving those kind of full summaries that tells the person exactly what's waiting for them. That's what the tags are for. I like my summaries uselessly pretty ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Best first lines?
From all cats are grey in the dark:
It's approaching sundown by the time Ichigo gets to the edge of the forest. The orange light coming from behind him casts a warm glow onto the leaves, and the slight breeze moves the tree canopies in an almost hypnotic way, the sound of leaves and branches brushing against each other soft and serene.
He can see how people get fooled into going into the forest without a guide.
Best last lines?
From your eyes at first morning:
Soon he will have to get up and give Ichigo the last dose, but right now he leans in and drops a kiss on his forehead, and allows himself to stay in Ichigo’s arms for a little longer.
The early morning sun shines on them, and everything’s alright.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
Much more. This has been my most productive writing year ever, and I owe much of it to fandom exchanges (shoutout to the EAD server for being lovely enablers). I also joined
inkingitout to keep me on my toes with a yearly goal and a weekly check-in.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
Ty Lee/Azula: My interest in Avatar is usually from a reader/art viewer point of view, so I wasn't expecting to ever create anything for it. I really enjoyed writing from Azula's pov, and I'm not opposed to doing it again.
Original Work: My interest in Original Work was revitalized this year, after reading this wonderful story, but I'm still impressed I wrote OW at all. I haven't written original stuff in some years now, and to be honest I didn't really miss it. I'm really happy deep in the fanfiction mines, and I still have a looooot of fics I want to write, so suddenly having the urge to write something original was news for me xD I would like to write some OW next year, even if it's small.
What's your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
The happiest? Hmmmmmmmmm 🤔 It's home is where you are wanted and all cats are grey in the dark. The first because I just fucking love Zagreus and Hypnos and Chaos, and I had such a blast writing them. I really enjoyed exploring Zagreus' feelings and abandonment issues, and I'm looking forward to the sequel :vibrates:. The second because I tried writing some horror, and while I didn't succeed all the way through, I still had fun coming up with the monsters and trying to make it scary on the page. Also, I just really like monster!Shinji.
Okay, NOW your most popular story:
home is where you are wanted, deservedly :3
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
betrayal; if I had to guess, I'd say it's because of the Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings tag. I also put no additional tags beyond telling people to read the author's notes. I still wouldn't change anything xD
Story that could have been better?
Oh boy, I have three of those. hoping your heart is free, scorpions in the sand, and so come and find me down the waterline. The problem with them is that I had many ideas and not enough spoons :c They could have been much longer, but I simply didn't have the energy to do them justice. (though I do have plans 👀)
Sexiest story? Saddest story? Most fun?
Sexiest: none xD
Saddest: this one is hard 🤔; I think home is where you are wanted and take yourself home. They have happy/hopeful endings, but the characters had to work to get there xD
Most fun: didn't know I was starving 'til I tasted you; I had a blast writing the ship banter.
Hardest and easiest story to write?
Hardest: eventide, because I feel like I couldn't convey exactly the feelings I wanted :/
Easiest: home is where you are wanted, because it just poured out of me with no resistance.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Yes, mostly by trying tropes/genres (spies/undercover, horror, etc.) and fandoms (Avatar, OW) I didn't think I'd ever play with. What I learned is that I can actually do it, if I put some effort into it xD Next year I wanna be a little more adventurous and try out some formats I usually don't deal with, like mission reports, epistolary, etc.
What are your fic writing goals for next year?
I'd like to hit the 100k mark again (though I have pledged only 85k at
inkingitout because small steps are important!), and keep participating in exchanges (though I'm only gonna participate in the ones I really like this time). I also have a sequel planned for home is where you are wanted, and I want to rewrite and finally finish one of my WIPs (probably as you come and I go).
I'd also like to be more consistent with my writing, instead of panicking and writing last minute to deadline. That kind of stress really took its toll on me this year, and I've had to give up some fics (and art!) because I'm just too tired to do them. Despite all that, 2021 has already been a much better year in the discipline department when I compare it to other years, and I hope to keep improving.
Conclusions:
Fanfiction is awesome and I want to do it for the rest of my life. Also, if I ever stop writing Bleach, I'm probably dead.
